Evelyn Chambers

Born in Newbury, Berkshire in 1964 I spent almost all my early life in Essex and Kent, most of my childhood being spent on livestock farms.

In 1986 I completed a degree in English Studies at Sunderland University which developed my lifelong love of Shakespeare.

I have lived in Kent since 1990 and prior to that lived in London and Cambridge.

My style is largely expressionist and I am heavily influenced by the Fauves, German Expressionists and early Renaissance painters. In my work I explore a series of paintings based on the absurd and surreal, which followed a visit to Prater Park in Vienna in the winter of 2004, an experience which was both sinister and comic. This is expanding into an examination of the modern with the ancient and the random and absurd nature of modern life..

I am also interested in landscape & equestrian painting, and the difficulty of avoiding cliché in these genres as well as trying to invest my work with a sense of place.
